[News]Entertainment firms are “hot” due to “the shift in generations” of Hallyu fever in Japan.

Money Today, 2010-11-01 07:16

[Money Today, Reporter Kim Geon Woo]

Hallyu fever in Japan, which made generational changes, makes the entertainment firms in Kosdaq (Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotation) hot. The base of Hallyu’s consumers has expanded to teenagers and people in their twenties as a result of environmental changes of the media. The teenagers and those in their twenties are considered as the new power in the growing Hallyu fever.

(omitted)

“The original Hallyu” Bae Yong Joon is a major shareholder of Keyeast. The expectations towards Keyeast from active workers, Bae Yong Joon and Kim Hyun Joong, are reflected in the market. Recently, the stock price of Keyeast increased to 34% in 11 business days continuously rising from about 2,700 won to about 3,700 won,

In November, Bae Yong Joon plans to hold the press conference for the documentary of “The Journey to Discover the Beauty of Korea,” his travel essay, and will participate in the DATV charity project with Kim Hyun Joong in December.

Kim Hyun Joong’s drama, “Mischievous Kiss” of MBC, was pre-sold to 12 countries including Japan. He is considered the Hallyu star of the next generation. Currently, “Mischievous Kiss” is in production of the 7, 10 minute episodes for the Youtube Channel.

Keyeast’s subsidiary company, Digital Adventure owns cable TV, DATV, and the companies that are intrinsic in Hallyu Fever. DATV must meet a quota of 15,000 members, their break-even point, but luckily they are running smoothly with 20,000 current members.

Industry officials said, “Hallyu’s demography, consists of females in their forties – fifties and has expanded to teenagers and people in their twenties. It’s said that Hallyu was regarded as a temporary bubble, but is now recognized for its high-class content. This shift is a direct result of the idol stars and its competitive plans.”

If you read this posting, please contact the prof Lee Tae Wook
He misses you a lot.
He said that you didn’t contact him for years and he is willing to storm into your wedding to see you.

During today’s class, he talked about you a bit.
Once he was late to class by 10 minutes and never came in.
Other students would often come in regardless of their tardiness, but Yong Joon had good manners, so he didn’t.

He said that BYJ was in the front row of class all the time.
One day, BYJ saw a student talking to the professor with his hands in his pockets. Something like that.. Anyway, that student was talking to him with this kind of attitude.
Yong Joon nim saw him and advised him to take his hands out of his pockets. +_+

[Trans]Good responses on his book.

Reposted from tweets

I want to buy Bae Yong Joon’s “The Journey to Discover the Beauty of Korea” (the writer wrote the name of his book in Japanese, so I assume he is in Japan now.), but it is sold out on most (on- line shopping websites?). Both Amazon, and Rakuten. Sob sob..

@etwas51 I didn’t know there is a Korean version. Thank you. Story-telling is popular in Korea, and his book is well written in telling the story. I want to buy it for my acquaintance. I think Bae Yong Joon knows about “Japan” very well.

[Trans]Two short postings mentioning BYJ

★Reposting from a tweet.

Three years ago, Bae Yong Joon and I smoked while sitting face to face, just the two of us. Of course, I hesitated, but he was magnanimous (broad-minded).

I was reading a Vietnamese novel at that time. He grabbed that book, so I told him to have it, but I was ashamed (? suehan: the writer used non-standard words, but I guess BYJ said “It’s okay” and the writer was kind of embarrassed).

Now I’m reading his book. I have a strange feeling.

Suddenly, I remembered a story about Bae Yong Joon who gained so much popularity from the Japanese ajummas a while ago due to the Yonsama boom.

[I took pedagogy (study of teaching methods) class in my junior year of college. At that time, the educational psychology professor was from the Sungkyunkwan University.

Bae Yong Joon went to the Sungkyunkwan Uni at that time as well. The professor used to say, “Oh, Bae Yong Joon is a very nice person.”

I thought that BYj was a truly nice person because even a courteous and generous professor spoke highly of him.]

[News]Kim Soo Hyun is the main actor of the BYJ & PJY’s co-production drama, “Dream High”.

Sports Chosun; 2010-10-26 15:10

Kim Soo Hyun, who appeared in “Giant” of the SBS, was selected as the main actor of the KBS new Mon-Tue drama “Dream High” which is the BYJ and PJY’s co-production drama.

On the 26th, according to the drama staff, it was confirmed that he was selected as the main actor of “Dream High”, as Song Sam Dong. Song Sam Dong is the character who wanted to be a ranchman in his childhood, but he fell in love with the main actress Ko Hye Mi at first sight and goes on to Kirin Art School thoughtlessly. Later, his genius musical talent is discovered and he becomes a star.

Drama staff said, “He has showed us basic solid acting ability in various works so far and we have watched him carefully from the early stage for the main character.”, and “He has a gifted acting ability and musical sense. We expect him to play an active role of the drama.” On the other hand, he drew the line regarding the casting of Taek Yeon of 2PM and Eun Jeong of Tiara by saying, “It hasn’t been confirmed yet.”

[News]Bae Yong Joon produces the documentary film of “The Journey to Discover the Beauty of Korea”!

Sports Korea; 2010-10-26 09:46

(Seoul=Sports Korea)Bae Yong Joon’s travel essay, “The Journey to Dsicover the Beauty of Korea” will be produced as a documentary film.

This book was published in Korea and Japan at the same time in September of 2009 and unexpectedly recorded high sales as a travel essay book, not a photo book. The Chinese and Taiwanese editions were published in September this year due to the continuous request for it overseas. The English edition will be published within this year.

Bae Yong Joon’s agent, keyeast, participates in this project with the Korea National Tour Organization and 6 local governments (Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, Jeonnam, and Choongcheong).

“The Journey to Discover the Beauty of Korea” was produced after experiencing the keywords of the Korean culture like kimchee, Korean traditional dress, tea, china, temple stay, Hwangryongsaji, Mireuksaji and Korean traditional house. It received high praise as the guide book of the Korean culture.

This documentary film will be produced for the 8 total episodes and aired at these various places of South-East Asia which included Japan and China. KNTO said that they expect that it reaches a massive amount of people from this documentary film potentially attracting around 10,000 Japanese tourists up until the year 2011. They also expect an increase of rural tourism in Korea.

The press conference of this documentary film will be held this coming November. The documentary film will air via domestic broadcasting.(Reporter, Kwon Hyun Jin news@isportskorea.com/photo_Keyeast)

[News]Taek Yeon and Eun Jeong will most likely appear in the Bae Yong Joon and Park Jin Young’s co-production drama, “Dream High”.

Newsen; 2010-10-25 21:27

Taek Yeon of 2PM and Eun Jeong of Tiara have a high possibility to appear as main characters in the KBS 2TV youth drama, “Dream High”.

It seems that there is a high possibility for them to appear together. Because Taek Yeon showed his ability to handle two jobs including acting in the drama, “Cinderella Sister”, and Eun Jeong performed her role well in “Death Bell” and “Coffee House”.

“Dream High” became a big issue due to Bae Yong Joon and Park Jin Young’s co-production of the drama. It has drawn attention because Bae Yong Joon relayed his intention to plan, produce, and appear in this drama. Park Jin Yong plans to handle the vocal and dance training for the newcomers as well.

It is said that the agencies that have big newcomers are in war with other agencies for casting, not only existing artists because it is a youth drama which describes the success, failure, and challenge of the would-be singers and actors.

Related to this news, staff of “Dream High” drew the line on the 25th by saying, “Eun Jeong and Taek Yeon have a high possibility to appear, but no one has made a contract with us yet.”

Another staff of the production department said, “The main casts will be about 5 artists”. He indicated that there is a big possibility for another member of the band to appear in the drama

Not only Taek Yeon, it has been known that Woo Young of 2PM will play a major role and it raises our expectation higher.

[Trans]Yonsama is truly a sama. He is outstanding.

Original in Korean: creamcheeze
Date/Time: 2010/10/24 03:57
Translated into English: suehan

I think Yonsama’s bento (lunch box), “Gosireh,” has been on sale at the convenient stores in Japan nationwide for five days so far. I heard from my co-workers that they don’t want to pay 2,500 yen for the lunch box even though they like Yonsama (most of who are middle aged women), But they said that some people around them bought several of them (suehan: actually the word she used means between 10 to 100) to eat or share with each others.

They’re buying those expensive 2,500 Yen lunch boxes!!! I would rather buy the nori bento (290 Yen) nine days in a row for the same price of buying the bento.
Several bentos? They are buying those expensive bentos because they like Yonsama! Is this what is coming from the fans’ mind?

Now, it’s said that the fever of Girls’ Generation and Kara is spreading all over Japan. But not many of the younger generations in my area know about Girls’ Generation or Kara even though they are popular in Tokyo and other big cities!!

Oh, some (?) college students who have one or two Korean friends most likely know about them. Even some who aren’t interested in Korea are very surprised that the trip between Korea and Japan is only 2 hours long via airplane. (that person might not have common sense.)

The most renowned things that the Japanese know about Korea are Kimchi, Bulgogi (beef), and spicy foods... “Do Koreans like spicy food?”, “Is it true that Bulgogi is delicious?”, and “Is Korean Kimchee better than Japanese Kimchee?”...

It’s said that Hallyu fever has cooled down now, but it is a very cold-hearted comment to say that the contribution of Korean entertainers to introduce Korea was just a phase (even though this introduction of Korea was not intentional). Surprisingly, many people are saying that they want to visit Korea after watching the Korean dramas.

This doesn’t only apply to the Japanese. The people from Hong Kong and Indonesia are very interested in Korea as well after hearing Korean pop songs and watching Korean dramas. I thought that “Ah.. that’s why the entertainers are chosen as the PR Ambassadors of Korea” after I heard that foreigners were humming to the beat of Korean songs even though they didn’t understand the lyrics.

I remember that I began to become interested in the culture of Japan after I watched the Japanese dramas in my youth. “I want to visit Japan.” They often entertain themselves with the images of the entertainers of Korea, who later indirectly persuade viewers to learn more about Korea. It becomes natural to want to visit the places which were shown in the drama and where their favorite entertainers have stayed.

Anyway, Yonsama is an outstanding entertainer.
He was introduced by “Winter Sonata” to Japan and he has had a tremendous number of Japanese fans who increased his popularity. As a result, I dare to say that he can bring a huge amount of Yen to Korea. I also acknowledge that he handles his image really well. I hope he can keep it up it continuously!!

Now I kind of understand why a modifier, “Sama,” was added to his name. The young people who weren’t interested in Yonsama said, “Why is he a ‘Sama’? anyway, it’s interesting.” But the ajummas are crazy about him.

One more thing, as I look at the menu of the expensive bento, “Gosireh”
I realize that it is a meal for the King something that I have yet to eat (but, the foreigners can have them for their “bento”, haha).

The Gosireh is not just Bulgogi, Kimchee, and spicy food.
It is the platter that demonstrates the high quality and sophistication of Korean food. There are teokgalbi, tofu wrapped with the sesame leaf, and colorful garnishes using red, yellow, white, and green on top of the shrimp. It is a bento made mostly by hand with love.

Now that I come to think about it, Japan’s marketing strategy for the overseas restaurants is to have them be defined as high class. I think we need to pay a lot in order to eat Japanese food and sushi overseas. We need to apply that same strategy.

The image that we give to consumers is very important. We see this image when we look at the marketing sense of Japan. Is it not better to be considered a country of high class, exotic food, and curiosity?
It might not be only Yonsama’s idea.

I’m convinced that Yonsama, who almost has the same influence as an enterprise in Japan, enhanced the national prestige of “Korea” with his popularity. Clap, clap, clap.

[News]Will the returning Bae Yong Joon defeat Jung Woo Sung and Park Sin Yang?

DongA Ilgo, 2010-10-25 07:50

Bae Yong Joon’s “Dream High” will be aired on Jan 3rd of next year.
It will collide with Park Sin Yang’s “Heaven”, and Jung Woo Sung’s “Athena”.

The collision of “the big 3 male actors” will start from the beginning of 2011.

Bae Yong Joon, Park Sin Yang, and Jung Woo Sung, who have the solid acting abilities and star qualities, will have a head-to-head contest for victory of the TV dramas, of which will be aired at the same time.

The main character who draws most attention is Bae Yong Joon. He didn’t appear in any dramas or movies since TWSSG in 2007. He will come back to TV in 4 years through the Mon-Tue Drama, “Dream High” which is confirmed to be aired on KBS 2TV on January 3rd.

“Dream High” is the youth drama collaborated by Hallyu star, Bae Yong Joon’s agent, Keyeast, Park Jin Young’s JYP Entertainment, and CJ Media. Bae Yong Joon, who is the representative of the Hallyu stars, and Park Jin Young, who has an excellent eye to select the new stars, held hands for this drama. Its storyline of teenagers who dream to become stars drew attention even when its production began.

Bae Yong Joon took a role of a supporter who helps the would-be stars in the art school, which is the background of the drama. He will be appearing in about 4-5 episodes out of the total 16 episodes. He is not a main character, but he is ready to show an impressive performance as the key role of the entire drama.

The staff of Keyeast said, “Bae Yong Joon came up with ideas from the beginning of the drama production and is going to handle the role that explains the entire drama. We expect that his entire appearance during the show will be less than Park Jin Young’s.”

[Extracted News Trans]How much will Bae Yong Joon & Park Jin Young appear in “Dream High”?

Sports Chosun; 2010-10-22 10:32

Regarding their appearance time, staff of “Dream High” said, “Bae Yong Joon will make special apperances in about 4 episodes, and Park Jin Young will appear a little more than him. He also said, “The main casts of ‘Dream High’ are the youth. Bae Yong Joon will appear as a supporter, but he will give an impressive performance. These appearances will remain as short remarkable roles not a major work. He will play as a producer who finds stars.”

But, Park Jin Young plans to appear more than him in the drama. Staff said, “Jin Man, who Park Jin Young will play, is a key role in the drama and he is very enthusiastic about his debut performance. We expect a lot from him because he will play a totally different character compared to the other roles on the stage.”

[News]Bae Yong Joon “won” the copyright infringement lawsuit against the Japanese Publishing Co.

Money Today, Reporter Lim Chang Soo : 2010.10.22 00:45

Hallyu star Bae Yong Joon won the copyright infringement lawsuit against the Japanese publishing company.

In the afternoon of October 21st, Nikkan Sports in Japan reported that Bae Yong Joon won the copyright infringement lawsuit and compensation for damages against Okura Publishing Company and their directors.

On that day, Judge Abe Masayuki of Tokyo district court ordered Okura Publishing Company to pay about four hundred forty thousand yen (about 61,000,000 won) to Bae Yong Joon.

According to Digital Adventure, which administrates Bae Yong Joon’s copyright, “It’s Koreal”, which Okura published, inserted a lot of Bae Yong Joon’s pictures in the July issue without permission.

Digital Adventure said, “It was a reasonable verdict and we’ll handle the copyright infringement cases with a firm attitude in the future as well.”

It proves Bae Yong Joon’s popularity once again as it’s heard.

Profits from this sale would be about seventy million won. Its price was 6,500 won in Korea and 1,200 yen (about 16,650 won) in Japan. Entire profits except production costs will be donated to the Global Environmental Program (GEP) of the Korean Committee of the United Environmental Plan (UNEP).

Wine Artisan who restored the Korean Traditional Wine.

The seventh “Only One Chance” that Bae Yong Joon has met from “The Journey to Discover the Beauty of Korea” was Park Rok Dam of the Korean Traditional Wine Lab.

[Meeting with an actor who loves traditional wine.]

reposted from www.hani.co.kr

For Park Rok Dam who has been working for the traditional wine restoration and popular culture, meeting with Bae Yong Joon who wants to introduce the Korean culture extensively was inevitable. Meeting at the dying artisan Ahn Hwan Ja’s house in Gurye was the beginning.

“I recommended him to brew Dongjeongchoon or Baekhwaju when he wanted to brew the wine. I told him to choose either one of them, but he wanted to brew both. So, I thought he would give up in the middle of the brewing, because even a good student can brew only one wine. But he completed the task without showing any difficulties even though the skin of his hand was peeling while brewing. I changed my mind when I noticed he was continuing the brewing without any concerns.” After that, Bae Yong Joon was fascinated by Park Rok Dam’s wine while he was drinking and comparing regular wine with the Korean Traditional wine like the one written in his book.

His manager said, “Usually, he doesn’t drink alone, but he gulps this wine every day.”, and he once received a call from BYJ (or his manager?) requesting him to send wine to BYJ. Actually we can feel a dignified and deep taste and smell the fragrance of fruits and flowers when we drink this wine. Bae Yong Joon might have felt same. He said that he has been sending wine to BYJ regularly to show his gratitude. He also said that brewing made them travel and talk together once a month

“It is easy to ignore manners when we get too close, but he is always the same as when we first met, no matter how much time passes. In any case, the teachers and elders come first. I went to his house and he was very nice. He had books, spinning wheel for pottery, and many other things, but I think he is lonely. He receives love from many people, but I think that he can’t do everything that he wants to do.”

He became Bae Yong Joon’s man and saw his enthusiastic love towards culture closely. He judges BYJ with love by saying, “He is a genuine actor, not a star.”

Recently, on the recommendation of Bae Yong Joon, he visited the Korean president’s house several times to show the brewing process. An actor who loves the Korean traditional culture wants to introduce it extensively. And it seems that the wine filled with the spirit of Park Rok Dam won’t take that long to receive loves from many people.

“To share with others is the brewing of peoples’ mind, not for themselves only. We ask ourselves and learn patience while brewing. This is the most important thing in the brewing process in Korea and it is shares the minds of Koreans. Treating, sharing, and drinking together are the culture of Korean wine and its export is the introduction of Korean wine extensively.”

Will the title, “Dream High” be changed?

KBS posted an ad to invite the public participation for the title of the drama, Dream High (tentative name) on their website. http://www.kbs.co.kr/drama/dreamhigh/index.html

It says that the title should only be Korean and the applications will be accepted for 10 days starting from October 19th to 28th. It also says that the selected title(s) will be used in the main title or subtitle.

[News]Bae Yong Joon will be on his Japanese fans’ cameras? He invites his 600 Japanese fans to the photo session.

2010.10.19 08:31

[Sports Today, Reporter Cho Beom Ja]Hallyu star Bae Yong Joon invites his Japanese fans to the photo session.

On the 19th, Japanese media report that Bae Yong Joon invited his 600 Japanese fans to the official photo session which is arranged in the public recording of the DATV charity program, “Message! to Asia” which is the first “Smile Project ”.

Usually, only media and organizers are allowed to attend the photo session, but according to his special request, his 600 fans are invited this time. His fans will have the opportunity to take pictures of him in real life.

Nikkan Sports in Japan showed big expectations by saying, “Taking pictures of him using their cameras is a dream to his fans.”
On the other hand, Bae Yong Joon and Kim Hyun Joon will attend this event and the entire profit will be donated under the name of “Smile Project”.

“Smile Project”, which is organized by Japan DATV, is the contribution project for the society and is planned for the children, who will be in charge of the future of Asia, to spend every day with smile. This project will help the disadvantaged children in Asia including Cambodia and Philippines through the non-profit organization, “Bounderless Children (KnK)”.

“Yonsama Hot News”
I need to do something to protect the environment.
Behind the story of the production of “2011 Environmental Protection Calendar”

“This Yonsama’s picture was filmed in Hawaii which he visited for the calendar shooting in July this year.

26 artists of Keyeast including Yonsama and Kim Hyun Joong got together to produce “2011 Environmental Production Calendar (1,260 yen)” for the desk. It’s accepting pre-reservation now.

It was made with the eco papers and soy bean inks which contain a minimum amount of contamination materials and are acknowledged by the Korean Environmental & Technology Institute. It is on sale in bofi (http://www.bofi.jp/) in Japan.

Yonsama made a public announcement of “the enthusiastic participation for the environmental production” whenever he has the opportunity. He is working on it right now. How about his update?

“He visited Gorilla at the end of last month, and the hair salon, Jeongsammool, at the beginning of this month.” (Korean Reporter)

[Trans]BYJ’s message about the Teacher Hyojae’s Kimchee Festival Tour

Hello, I’m Bae Yong Joon.

I’m glad to hear that the teacher Hyojae will organize “the Hyojae’s Kimchee Festival”. I developed a precious relationship with the teacher Hyojae while I wrote a book last year. I could feel the beauty of the Korean culture, the tastes coming from her hands, and her truthful thoughts while I was learning how to make Kimchee at her house.

Kimchee has a superb taste and efficacy, and there is nothing that can be wasted. The Kimchee is our culture’s boast of pride. Most of all, I had delighted moments while I was making kimchee with my friends, and it still remains in my memory with the warm-hearted feelings. I hope you too have nice and warm moments at the Kimchee festival while you make kimchee with the teacher Hyojae.

[News Trans] “Bae Yong Joon’s Documentary” will be a green light to attract the Japanese tourists.

October 7th, 2010

Tourists spots in Pohang and Gyeongju will be introduced.

Hallyu star Bae Yong Joon will produce the video documentary with the beauty of Korea and he plans to air it in Korea and Japan nationwide. Famous tourists spots of Pohang and Gyeongi are also included in the documentary and it’s expected that it will be a big help in attracting Japanese tourists.

Keyeast, in which Bae Yong Joon is a major shareholder, is working on the production of a documentary video using the highlights of the whole country that appeared in his essay book, “The Journey to Discovery the Beauty of Korea” which was released last September.

The city of Gyeongbook said, in Gyeongbook 1 of the part 3, Moongyeongyo, Sangjoo Folk Song, Hahoe Town in Andong, and Hahoe Masked Dance will be filmed with the subject of “Adjust the dress, fill me and empty me”.

In Gyeongbook 2 of the part 4, Hwangryongsaji, Seokgulam, and Boolguksa in Gyeongju and the tourists spots of Pohang such as Guryongpo Japanses town, Jookdo Market, and Hojigot with the subject of “Pass the ancient times and walk the modern times” will be introduced.

The tourists spots of Pohang didn’t appear in his book, but it’s said that the city of Pohang made a special request.

The production team including the producer in charge already visited the sites and will start the shooting from the middle of October. The video documentary will be aired on MBC and they say that they’re currently negotiating with the Japanese broadcasting company about the airing.

Jang Jeongsool, the team leader of the International Cooperation Department of the city of Pohang, said that “We expect that the video documentary airing will attract more Japanese tourists due to Bae Yong Joon’s marketable quality.”

[News Trans]Bae Yong Joon and Kim Hyun Joong’s power? 2011 Keyeast Eco Calendar was sold out in Korea and Japan.

[2010-10-06 23:22:10]

2011 Keyeast Eco Calendar was sold out on-line shopping sites in Korean and Japan in one day..

The Eco Calendar that was produced by the Keyeast artists and Korean committee of UNEP sold out quickly right after the sales started through the domestic and foreign websites.

The Eco Calendar was made by the environmental production process with 100% environmental papers and vegetable soybean oil ink. It also functions as the eco diary, not only as a calendar.

This diary is the second environmental campaign of Keyeast since they donated their entire profits from the environmental photos last May. They also plan to donate their entire profits to the Global Environmental Program (GEP) of the Korean Committee of the United Environmental Plan (UNEP).

Keyeast said, “We were surprised of the speed of the sales, which was much quicker than what we had expected.”, and “We appreciate that many people showed their interests in the environmental issues and participated in it actively. We decided to produce additional calendars due to the high volume of demands both domestically and internationally.”

2011 Eco Calendar can be downloaded through the Korean and English version of the smart phone application domestically and worldwide, in October.

[Trans]BYJ's high school class mate says..

from the comment section of missyusa.com.

“I was in the same class with Yong Joon in Hanyoung High School (day class). Do you know the composer, Park Keun Tae? He was in the same class with me as well. Yong Joon was neat, played billiards very well, and dressed well. He was even famous with the girls of Myungil girls’ High School and Jung Shin Girls’ High School nearby.

He was never interested in fighting and was close to the elite class mates (including me. Haha). He was interested in movies, such that he was the member of the Drama Club. He went to the Shin Myung Reading Rooms in the Myungil Apartment Complex. Many girls used to wait for him in front of the reading rooms when he was about to get on the van (suehan: after study). OMG, who is spreading the rumor that he was in the night class? He has a bad temper? No way. I’m just laughing at this false rumor.”

I found another posting regarding his high school days from the twitter account.

“I would like to give off the tender charisma like Bae Yong Joon. Long times ago, I used to go to the same gym and billiard room with Bae Yong Joon. I didn’t go with him, just same time and same place. We used to live in the same neighborhood, Gangdonggu. Bae Yong Joon went to the Hanyoung High School, and I went to the Baejae High School.”

[Trans]Who do you want to play golf with?

from "Yoon Eun Ki’s Golf Management 19"

By Yoon Eun Ki, Dean of the Seoul School of Integrated Sciences & Technologies; yoonek18@chol.com

We, golf columnists sometimes have a meeting. A while ago, we exchanged the opinions on the question of “Who do you want to play golf with?”

Among the entertainers, Most of us would like to play with Bae Yong Joon, Lee Byung Hun, Song Seung Hun, Hong Yo Sup, and Kim Young Chul. Some would even like to play Choi Bul Am. Among the female entertainers, Kim Tae Hee, Lee Young Ae, Jeon In Hwa, and Jeon Ji Hyun were most popular.

Years ago, I had an opportunity to play golf with Bae Yong Joon and I was very surprised of his driving distance. It was beyond my expectation. In a short Par 5, he often could bring the ball on the green with two shots.

[Trans]Kim Hyun Joong talks about Bae Yong Joon

From the KHJ’s interview in the magazine, Women Joongang October issue.

(omitted)

There was a rumor that Kim Hyun Joong made a remarkable improvement in popularity because of his leading role in the band SS501 and his previous drama “Boys over Flowers” both moved into the entertainment industry in Japan. That rumor turned out to be true. Recently, he made an exclusive contract with ‘Keyeast’ which is operated by Bae Yong Joon, and it’s said that he is getting more gifts in Keyeast than Yonsama. It’s the first time since the company was founded that Bae Yong Joon was not the leading receiver of gifts. However, Bae Yong Joon is happy that he was able to sign Kim Hyun Joong.

“Yong Joon hyeong (suehan: big brother) and I often chat about relationships with women while having drinks.”

Kim Hyun Joong was selected as the next generation Hallyu star since he became popular in the Asian market, including Japan. And then, the original Hallyu star Bae Yong Joon picked him around the time when his contract with his previous agency was about to expire sometime last June. He became Yonsama’s man. He considers Yonsama as his role model. I was wondering how he thinks about the president, Bae Yong Joon. He called Bae Yong Joon as “Yong Joon hyeong” without hesitation when he was asked about their relationship.

“Frankly I was nervous when I met him the first time. His power and status was so strong when he got out of his car. I thought I was looking at the demigods like the King or Zeus. He isn’t a type of person who goes around puffed up or shows off, but I might have felt intimidated by his name “Yonsama”. After we exchanged a few words, I realized that “Ah.. He is a human being like me”. Now I think of him as a brother in the neighborhood.”

Bae Yong Joon makes a mythical impression like he doesn’t get along with people or he refrains himself from the outside world. But it’s said that he is just not noticed. He is a busy bee and is comfortable with his friends.

There is a fourteen years age difference between the two of them. They communicate and get along very well even though their age difference represents that of an uncle – nephew relationship. Recently, Bae Yong Joon and he, only the two of them, have been together about two or three times a week. They chat comfortably about the usual life stories, not dramas or albums, while they drink a coffee and green tea.

Bae Yong Joon is a major shareholder of his agency; Kim Hyun Joong is a new face who Bae Yong Joon signed enthusiastically. In other words, they have a “president” and “a competent new employee” relationship. But Kim Hyun Joong said, “Looking at him from the side, Bae Yong Joon is easygoing, different than I had expected. He feels uncomfortable about the nickname which was given to him by the media. He becomes serious (?) by saying, “Don’t’ mess around with my name. Say my real name” when his friends make a telephone call and say “Hi, Yonsama”.

“I just call him Yong Joon hyeong. I can’t call him ‘the president’ or ‘Yonsama’. I can’t call him Ahjeossi (suehan; It means middle-aged man) either (laugh). I have a very comfortable relationship with him. We talk about our problems and we chat for hours easily. Sometimes, we get excited about pretty girls when we’re drinking. We talk about old girlfriends as well. We’re just like other men.”

He took over the cosmetic brand, ‘The Face Shop’, advertisement where Bae Yong Joon worked as a model. The photos and concepts of the advertisement give off a similar image that of Bae Yong Joon’s. This coming December, he will go to Japan with Bae Yong Joon for a stage appearance. It seems that his agency is operating ‘the little Yonsama project’ a bit intentionally. But Bae Yong Joon doesn’t coach him. “He doesn’t direct me to do this and that, every detail. I just watch him on the side and learn what I need from him when it is necessary.

Hyeong is very thorough in his self-management. He’s never shown a weak appearance to others. I try to take after his qualtiies. Aside from taking after him I think the expression of ‘Little Yonsama’ is too overestimated. I’ve never encountered the fans even after the events in Japan because I have only stayed in the hotel. So, I’m not sure whether I’m popular or not. Are you asking me why the fans like me? Hmm.. Because, I’m cute (laugh)”

[Trans]Bae Yong Joon didn't take a picture with me.

Lee Byung Hun came to our golf course.
Bae Yong Joon came here before as well, but he didn't take a picture with me.

Anyway, I took a picture with Lee Byung Hun.
My manager scolded me by saying that I shouldn’t do that when the members were watching us. Hahaha
It’s okay for me even though I was scolded.
He was so handsome.
