[Article]I wonder where Bae Yong Joon will head to now.

Kang Myung Seok; 2011.01.27 15:44

Bae Yong Joon

Bae Yong Joon: “At one point, I thought my life was full and beyond my capacity. But now, I’m grateful for that role. If I must do it, then I want to do it the best of my capabilities. Of course, someday, my life may feel full once again.” – Bae Yong Joon, at the interview with “Yonhap News”
Lots of strength, lots of responsibility. It is the life of a man to carry those two qualities.

Kim Jae Yeop: The owner of the acting institute where Bae Yong Joon used to attend. According to him, Bae Yong Joon was very sincere and constantly prepared to become an actor. When Bae Yong Joon was a teenager, he decided to become an actor to quickly make money during his family’s financial troubles. He had a reserved personality and enjoyed assembling and disassembling toys alone rather than playing with his friends. But, he started to play with his friends and sports while learning Hapkido when he was in junior high and high school. The elders around him worried about him changing, but they thought that “It isn’t best to follow the path that is recommended to him by their experiences.” Bae Yong Joon jumped at an acting job after he graduated high school.

Kwon O Joong: An actor who went to the acting institute with Bae Yong Joon. He was part of the staff at the filming location of the movie, “The Girl for Love and The One for Marriage”. After he appeared as an extra in “Pilgu”, he was recognized and received free acting lessons at the acting institute. He met Kwon O Joong at that time. He learned Kungfu from Kwon O Joong and débuted in KBS’s “Salute D’Amour” At that time, Bae Yong Joon decided to make “Be like a convenient store” as his personal motto. Because, after experiencing situations at many filming locations, he wanted to be an actor who could present anything that the directors wanted.”

Jun Ki Sang: Director of “Salute D’Amour”. He thought, “Bae Yong Joon is so handsome” when he first saw Bae Yong Joon. He thought that Bae Yong Joon’s noble-like features might be a problem, so he ordered Bae Yong Joon to do one thing. He ordered Bae Yong Joon to wear glasses. History would then be born. As the director Jun Ki Sang had predicted, Bae Yong Joon could show his tender and handsome image wearing glasses. In the early 1990s, with the appearance of so-called the “X-Generation”, Bae Yong Joon was a romantic guy who appeared when “beautiful boys” started to get attention.

The late Cho So Hye: She is the writer of KBS’s “A Place in the Sun” and “First Love”. The late Cho So Hye paved the way for Bae Yong Joon to achieve sure stardom with “A Place in the Sun.” She also made him take off his glasses in “First Love”. He played a rebellious teenager who couldn’t achieve his dream even though he was smart because of his poor family background. That character somewhat compared to Bae Yong Joon’s teenage life. He acted in the scene where he collided into the truck while he was riding a motorcycle without a stuntman. He proved that he had the ability to shoot action scenes. After that, he showed his action skills in KBS’s “The Barefooted Youth” and appeared as a cold-hearted man who pursued only success in MBC’s “Have We Really Loved?”. His image in KBS’s “Winter Sonata” was big, but he continuously changed the way he was seen within every frame. Bae Yong Joon described his personality. “I’m not tough or mild.”

Kim Hye Soo: Bae Yong Joon’s partner in “Have we really loved?”. Bae Yong Joon even said, “I enjoyed talking (with Kim Hye Soo). I learned a lot from her.” Kim Hye Soo commented on him by saying, “It isn’t easy to be close to him because of his defensive personality, but he does express himself when he is friends with someone. He is a perfectionist when he works.” Bae Yong Joon, who achieved his stardom in his 20s, was “too young and wanted only to show his perfection. He had a passive personality and rarely appeared in the media or game shows. It was a good chance for the media to write articles about his “mythical strategy”. At that time, he concentrated on acting with “Have we really loved?”. In this drama, he wasn’t a romantic or a tough guy. He played as a reserved man who wanted to leave a poor town and reach success regardless of his financial difficulties. His acting showed a deeper side more seriously compared to than his previous works. If you want to see his acting skills in 1990s, then this is the drama to see.

Lim Jong Pil: The trainer who was hired to shape his body for the photo book, “The Image Vol 1”. “He exercised a lot, but didn’t exercise systematically. He will be the best jem if he is trained well,” said Lim Jong Pil of Bae Yong Joon. Bae Yong Joon followed Lim Jong Pil’s instructions well enough for Lim Jong Pil to comment, “There is no such person in this world (speaking of Bae Yong Joon).” Since Bae Yong Joon’ debut, he has been on potatoe diets when they were necessary. He reduced his weight by about 6kg in MBC’s “Hotellier” and 7kg in the movie, “Scandle”. He was so athletic that he looked like a natural at his first experience horseback riding. He enjoys golfing because he thinks that golfing is a good mornign exercise. He plays piano well enough to play “Moonlight Sonata” in the movie, “Immotal Beloved” when he so chooses. Since his debut, he developed in interest in photo shoots. He also made the photo commentary in “Scandle”. He became a second generation tycoon after appearing in the drama. No, he is the tycoon.

Choi Ji Woo: She is an actress who appeared in “First Love” and “Winter Sonata” with him. Bae Yong Joon talked about her in “Winter Sonata” by saying, “She matured.” He also commented on Song Yoon Ah in “Hotellier”, “She acted very seriously.” On Lee Young Ae of KBS’s “Papa”, he said, “She is beautiful and has lots of patience.” Choi Ji Woo who has a clean and pure image matched well to “Winter Sonata” which shows her pure fairy tale love; the show also maximized Bae Yong Joon’s romatic image. “Winter Sonata” was exported to Japan.

Yoon Seok Ho: He is the director who worked a number of pieces with Bae Yong Joon. Of course, their most recognized work is KBS’s “Winter Sonata”. Bae Yong Joon said that “There are some necessary parts which this era needs” of “Winter Sonata.” “Winter Sonata” recorded a big hit historically. After “Winter Sonata”, “5,000 were very excited” during his first visit to Japan the news stated. The city of Kakamigahara in Kihoo, Japan, which set up a sisterhood relationship with the city of Chuncheon where “Winter Sonata” was filmed, spent 10 million yen to organize the “Winter Sonata” theme event, “Winter Sonata, Chuncheon Story” and had a great ripple effect of 3 billion yen. Bae Yong Joon then became “Yonsama” a word that has stronger meanings than just star.”

Lee Jae Yong: He is the director of “Scandle”. Bae Yong Joon “wanted to show that he was able to act for the movie” and acted as a playboy of the Chosun Dynasty without glasses while gaining explosive popularity in Japan. Nobody expected him to lie and play innocent, as he occassionally deserted woman with a cold look after he became “Yonsama”. But, before “Winter Sonata”, he tried to play various roles and learned traditional martial arts for months for a short action scene because of his perfectionist nature. It’s known that the production team of “Scandle” was suprised to see Bae Yong Joon admitting his limits. After “Winter Sonata”, he chose to be “an actor named Bae Yong Joon”. But, “Yonsama’s star quality” gained too much recognition as people could no longer see him as just “an actor named Bae Yong Joon.”

Son Ye Jin: An actress who apppeared in the movie “April Snow” with Bae Yong Joon. In “April Snow”, Bae Yong Joon played a role of a man who commited adultery as he showed the world his versatility as an actor. But it wasn’t easy for him to adjust to the shooting system, a shooting style that constantly changes (acting) according to the locations and circumstances. He only shot after complete preperation. He said it was “stressful not to express or throw away what he had inside” while he learned “a completely different acting style” at the same time. it was also difficult for him to act as an adulterer with his conservative personality. A personality that he admits to having. At the same time, in the face of the media, he became an actor who had the ability to make any piece successful as people fixed on his image as the man of “Winter Sonata”. “April Snow” might be considered his transition period, a period he had to face. At that time during the CF filming, the stress he faced was evident when he was requested to show the same smiling expression. He said “I’m an actor. I want to be an actor and I want to act well. How can I better myself as an actor if I must repeatedly have only one way the audience sees me?” in response.

Kim Jong Hak: The director of MBC’s “TWSSG” which Bae Yong Joon appeared in. Kim Jong acknowledged Bae Yong Joon as one of the partners who was responsible for “TWSSG”. He changed the direction of the drama when Bae Yong Joon claimed that “If we keep going this way, we, the director and I both will crumble. It might end the Hallyu.” But, “TWSSG” wasn’t the only work that showed off Bae Yong Joon's business skills. The reason that Damdeon, the main charcter in "TWSSG," can show God-like abilities is because of the aura that can only come from a face like Bae Yong Joon's. Bae Yong Joon is expressionless or shows only a neutral smile in the most of his works, but his silent presence can be felt. Moreover, his presence, which is recognized as something other than of a common person, made us understand the story of “TWSSG”. He showed a unique acting skill by melting his own personality, which is coming from maintaining a good public image (like not drinking), in the great public interest with his present status and star quality. That acting skill is created only by the actor who is called “sama” and star. There is no actor who can act like Bae Yong Joon in ‘TWSSG” even though there are many actors who can show more various acting skills than Bae Yong Joon.

Jeong Ha Myung: The character who Bae Yong Joon played in KBS’s “Dream High”. Jeong Ha Myung is the chairman of the board of Kirin Art School who notices the personality and talent as something that can be cultivated into a star, even in a short amount of time. It is a very unrealistic situation. But his unique presence, which is unbelievable even to him, makes this possible. It comes from the result of his efforts to not only be a Hallyu star, but also a promoter of culture by learning about traditional, Korean culture and master artisanship, and writing "A Journey in Search of Korea's Beauty." In “Dream High”, he headed overseas after he chose the potential stars. After he left, new Hallyu stars are going to appear. He is too important of a figure to simply call him a star. He is one who takes steps forward while transforming himself and accepting situations as they are. I wonder where Bae Yong Joon will head to now.

I thought this part-time job was going to be high-class work because my job was to wrap the wine.
I still had fun, even though it ended up being hard labor.
My co-workers and employees of the company were nice.

[News]“Dream High”, the city of Goyang officially supports and receives lots of attention in Japan.

Yonhap News 2011-01-28 18:01

[photo]Hot packs sent by Bae Yong Joon’s Japanese fan

It is known that KBS 2TV’s Mon-Tue drama “Dream High”, which keeps the ratings up with Goyang City’s official support, is receiving lots of attention in Japan and it has become a topic.

On the 26th, Kobayashi Kazyo (female, 21 years old) who resides in Kyoto, Japan sent mail and 240 hot packs that attaches to the clothing for the casts and staff. She said that she read the article on the internet saying, “The Dream High filming set is so cold and Choi Seong, the mayor of city of Goyang, supported the heating equipments.”.

On January 27th, someone related to the city of Goyang visited the filming set in Sarihyeong-dong and delivered the hot packs and sincerities from many Japanese fans including Ms. Kobayasi.

On that day, the director Lee Eung Bok of KBS who directed the shooting said, “The casts are having lots of difficulties due to the cold weather. The mayor Choi Seong supported the heating equipments, but we’ve never expected to receive such warm presents from Japan.” He showed his confidence on the successful shooting and the great success of the drama.

It’s known that in Japan, “Dream High” received lots of attention even before the shooting started around middle and old aged “Bae Yong Joon’s fan club” and younger generation of “2PM’s fan club (Ok Taec Yeon).

We are able to assume the outcomes above through these two happenings; On December 27 of last year, about 300 hundred Japanese fans visited the press conference which was held at Kintex with Hallyu star Bae Yong Joon who represents Korea and the star maker, Park Jin Young. Japanese female fans always visit the main shooting sites.

In Ms. Kobayashi’s case, she already visited the Goyang city twice with her mother and aunt, and she collects the information of the main shootings sites of “Dream High” and posts on her blog and the fan café often.

According to someone associated with the city, approximately 1,000 Japanese fans of “Dream High” visited the Goyang city. The popularity of Hallyu star and “Dream High” will be at the peak in August of this year when the drama airs in Japan.

The city of Goyang, which works on the Hallyu sightseeing projects, supports the filming and supplements the facilities of the filming sites along with the cooperation for the filming production and public relations.

Also, once the airing ends, the city plans to create a tour package connecting the main filming sites, famous tour sites and Anygol restaurant district and hold events like autograph sessions for fans..

“Dream High” finished about half of the entire drama and records about 15% viewing rates. It is in the lead among the Mon-Tue dramas of the other TV stations..

The Mayor Choi Seong of Goyang who visited the filming sites several times and directed the assistant plan said, “The ‘Dream High’ project is just the beginning. I will set up a department to handle the broadcasting - communication industry through the reorganization, and make the city of Goyang the city of Hallyu culture city which represents Korea by making a large Bromex (Broadcasting and Multimedia Complex) and the biggest underwater filming site in the East, inviting famous movie and broadcasting companies and raising a broadcasting fund.”

[Info]Restaurant “Maisen” which BYJ & KHJ visited in Tokyo on Dec 16th, 2010.

Yuri nim visited the restaurant “Maisen”, the Aoyama main store in Tokyo, and shared the pictures and information with us on her blog, http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/yuri81055/MYBLOG/yblog.html.

She heard that BYJ had visited the restaurant before, and this time he returned with KHJ. She asked the store about KHJ, but they said, “We don’t know about Hallyu star, but little Bae Yong Joon came with him.”

I believe this is the front of the store, “Maisen”

The table he used.

He ordered a “Black Pig Fillet Cutlet Set Meal”,
and its price is 2,995 Yen.

Yuri nim said that the sauce was sweet because grinded apple was added, the meat was tender and the fried batter was very crispy. It looks delicious.^^

[Trans]Bae Yong Joon carries smile. 5D4N in Tokyo @ Marie Claire... Part 2

During the night before the event, he unexpectedly came to his stylist’s room. He was wearing comfortable training wear and said, “This freshly made hamburger is good. Try some.” while holding a long bag in his hand.

Before his seat was arranged, he served his staff with burgers as he explained the ingredients inside of the burgers knowing the individual staff members likes and dislikes of food. He cut the burgers by himself and made sure that everyone got one. While watching the documentary on the sofa with his staff, no one spoke or moved knowing that he is “Yonsama”. With Yonsama, there wasn’t the uneasiness that others felt around most entertainers. It was comfortable because noone could feel Yonsama’s presence.

After 10 pm, Bae Yong Joon got up from his seat first. Someone from the group told me, “He is leaving to ready himself for tomorrow’s event. Oppa changes when he works.” I couldn’t tell the difference between private and public matters. But unfortunately, his name is too influential and his expections of himself are so high when he works. His work ethic is beyond imagination. Nobody will know just how hard he pushed himself that night.

The next day the number of fans increased about three or four times as many as the previous day. They started to gather at dawn. Looking down at the excited fans from his room should have made him restless. He left the hotel after 10 am. His car was moving in front of us and then suddenly stopped for a moment. There were so many people gathered on the road that the hotel employees had to regulate the traffic in the middle of the road. No accidents occurred. Bae Yong Joon’s fans have manners just like their favorite actor. Bae Yong Joon stopped his car for a moment, opened the window, waved his hand, and lowered his head.

It’s said that the capacity of the Tokyo Dome is 50,000. If Bae Yong Joon and his company focused only on the profit of the event they would have sold the seats that had no accurate view of the stage. The stage would have looked like a dot. But thanks to Bae Yong Joon, who thought that it would be meaningful if everyone was capable of enjoying the event to its full capacity, the seats were limited to 30,000. One of the more surprising matters was that all of the seats were sold at the same price: VIP seats, R seats and A seats. Tickets were also sold in slow incremements to prevent illegal ticketing. Those who were lucky enough to see him at a closer range were picked out of a drawing.

He took care of even small matters. During the rehearsal, he showed his meticulousness by checking the guests’ rehearsal scenes and their moving lines. While staying in the waiting room, he was busy showing his gratitude to the guests from Asia first; Gackt from Japan, an actor and singer Oh Geon Ho and Jeong Won Chang from Taiwan. After the photo call for the press was over, there was discussion about whether he was too formally dressed compared to the other guests. He wore a suit as he usually did but the other guests were wearing casual clothing.

Camera; For Bae Yong Joon, the camera is the same as a secret word or code. He doesn’t want to share it with others. Bae Yong Joon or Yonsama is not on the other side of the lens. It is just something that makes his heart pump.

As a host of today’s party, he continuously questioned or asked whether it would be polite to adjust to the guests’ desires. Would the audience feel the difference? Until he went up onstage, it seemed like there was no correct answer for it. He checked and checked again as he adjusted the direction of his neck-tie constantly. Behind stage, Bae Yong Joon constantly switched between feeling relaxed and stressed. He pushed himself and then relaxed continuously.

After the party began, he went up onstage about the time when the party was at its peak as guests were coming forward to gain recognition for their good deeds. He didn’t sing or dance like other guests, but the sudden screams from the audience made it seem as though he did. Bae Yong Joon brought his thin and long index finger to his lips once, opened and closed his eyes, and slowly moved his eyes towards the audience. The hall became quiet right away and even the emcees were surprised by the silence. Which artist has the ability to control the audience this well? The party on that day ended after he donated the camel color coat he wore in “Winter Sonata”, three bottles of wine which were selected by him, and the neck tie which he was wearing. Surprisingly enough, he didn’t expect to donate his tie but rather decided to donate it at a whim.

I can’t say that I saw all of Yonsama or Bae Yong Joon for the last five days, but it definitely helped me realize what kind of person he is and how he controls himself in front of the public eye. The most important thing to him is the way he approaches others, not the speed or direction.

Behind Story of “Dream High”

(Bae Yong Joon, the charismatic actor who represents Korea.)

(Park Jin Young plays a wild and vital role in Dream High.)

(Official Mentors in Dream High)

Kim Soo Hyun: Bae Yong Joon encouraged me a lot. After the airing, he contacted me by sending text messages or telephone calls.

(Bae Yong Joon: I watched your acting. You expressed your emotions well, but not your lines.)

Eunjeong: After each episode, he encouraged me by sending text messages or advised me on my acting at the filming site. He advised me whenever he has time by saying “I watched your acting. You did very well such and such..”

(Bae Yong Joon: I watched your acting. Cheer up!)

Taecyeon: I didn’t receive any text messages.

Eunjeong: Really?

Taecyeon: I think he only sends them to girls. I don’t have his phone number and he didn’t advise me on anything.

Eunjeong: Really? He advised me and Suzy.

Taecyeon: I filmed only one scene with him. (The scene where Taecyeon caused a disturbance.) He didn’t advise me on anything.

Bae Yong Joon: Ah.. Did I? (Was I indifferent to him?)

[Trans]Bae Yong Joon carries smile. 5D4N in Tokyo @ Marie Claire... Part 1

Bae Yong Joon was handsomely wearing a suit and a smile. He was still the same as before. Comfort comes from wearing skinny jeans and a loose t-shirt and exploding in laughter at a light joke. His ability to be in this comfortable mode shows him in another light.

Tokyo. “Yonsama” is a proper noun. It is only one word and has a huge impact just by the name itself. The reason he doesn’t show up that much in public is because of all of the “bad” responsibilities of having that name. Yonsama must be more cautious when he goes out because his outings affect not only the culture but the economy too. After the first visit, he wasn’t allowed to use Haneda airport because even the airport was affected by his appearance. Haneda allowed Bae Yong Joon to use their airport for his visit back to Japan since a year and three months ago.

Is there any other event which can make Haneda’s dignity, which was remodeled recently, proud? His fans filled the big lobby and surrounded the outside of airport. This surprising scene stirred drama and was spread throughout the media just like when he had visited Japan the first time. It is Bae Yong Joon who expresses his joy by raising his hand or lowering his head as usual to his 4,000 fans.

Tokyo; For Bae Yong Joon, Tokyo is like a mailman that brings the past to the present, and sends it to the future after Tokyo regenerates itself. Bae Yong Joon was Joon Sang of “Winter Sonata”. Who will he appear as next time?

Bae Yong Joon visited Japan in order to work on the “Smile Project”, a charity event to help the children in Asia. It is a concert where celebrities from all over Asia gather and donate their favorite items. This time, Bae Yong Joon not only hosted organizing the charity party but also took the task of caring for the invited guests on stage and in the crowd. Of five days in Tokyo, only one day is scheduled as his official activity day. The following day he is unofficially scheduled to take pictures with 5,000 Japanese fans that have been selected through a drawing.

Unofficial or official scheduling aside, his concerns are focused around only one thing. The fact that people he calls family, his fans, are waiting for him is his biggest concern. His fans would wait for hours regardless of weather or place if they could meet him. The weather of December in Tokyo was cold. He refrains from going out in consideration of his fans. He knows that the best return is to show his face to his fans, but he can’t always appear for them. Therefore his private time was limited during his stay in Japan. That private time was used to eat dinner with his brother, Kim Hyun Joong, who sang the theme song of the “Smile Project”.

Smile: It looks like his eyesight can’t be budged with excuses, his tightly closed lips show strong will. But his lips and eyesight look bright and cool when he returns to the average man. He always looks like this way if he is Bae Yong Joon instead of “Yonsama”.

They had a light dinner at the ramen shop where Kim Hyun Joong always goes to whenever he visits Japan. It was a surprise to see BYJ wearing high-top shoes and skinny jeans, instead of his usual neat suit. Many people probably want to see him relaxing like this. I remember that my friend, who is in the fashion industry, saw him in Cheongdam-dong. My friend talked about his superior height wearing a padded vest and baggy pants. He is quite a fashion star. If he wasn’t wearing “official” clothing he would be wearing a bulky knitwear, blouson, skinny jeans, and walker all the time. His fashion sense is excellent, it is beyond my imagination.

He finished his tight filming schedule of the drama “Dream High” right before he got on the plane. Even though it was co-produced, it was his first experience as a producer. His appearance as a guest star was an important part in the show and allowed for a smooth transition in the story line. Moreover, he hasn’t appeared on camera for a long time so he probably spent most of his saved energy in perfecting that small but important role.
